ALERT! - New Round of Rural Broadband Stimulus Funding Announced

The NTIA and USDA announced on Jan 15th the availability of $4.8 Billion in a second round of ARRA grants and loans to expand broadband access and adoption in America.

What does this mean for you as a government or municipal body and for your residents, businesses, organizations, and your local economy? More than anything, it means that you and your constituents need to be part of the process, to understand how available technologies and opportunities merge to make the best possible proposal, and be able to effectively evaluate each of the many proposals that will cross your desk.

You will likely not want to submit your own application for these funds but rather associate with the best proposal covering your area. It's important, however, that you effectively represent your community and perform adequate due diligence in evaluating all options. The selected application must make technical sense and must have a real chance of success. Gaslight Media consultants can evaluate each option and explain the benefits and hazards, or if desired can design and produce a solution tailored to the specific challenges of your area.

These applications must be submitted by March 15th. Contact Gaslight Media now and let us help you navigate through this complicated process.

UCMAN - University Center Metropolitan Area Network

Using a mix of underground fiber and wireless transport, the network was built originally to connect Otsego county government, 46th Circuit courts, Gaylord Public schools and the University Center. However, soon after launch in 2005—at the request of local businesses and advisors—UCMAN was opened for general availability and to date the network is providing Gaylord area businesses and residents with broadband Internet services.

UCMAN has also established wireless hot spots at Glen’s Market, the University Center (interior and exterior), Treetops Resort restaurant/warming hut on top of ski hill and throughout the central downtown business district of this historic northern Michigan community.
